Art and the conscious mind

November 1, 2010

17.5.10. Attended a lecture by Robert Pepperell. He discussed perception with relation to art but what stood out for me was the discussions on existence. What parts of us form parts of the work we produce and the things we see. For example – if we send someone a letter is part of our existence in the letter for them to see when they open it and read it and are we therefore actually exiting within the letter rather than just within the mind of the reader. Another example – to a animal such as a fox, with a highly developed sense of smell, our existence from their perception is up to a kilometre across. They can smell us from a kilometre away and therefore to them that is their perception of our existence.
