Messed up World

January 11, 2011

I just watched the BBC news. There were two stories that stuck out for me because it was like watching news form two different planets. The one story was about the banks and the enormous and, some may say, immoral bonuses they pay out to their employees and the questioning of Bob Diamond the boss of Barclays Bank by MPs. The other was about a local authority, Rhondda Cynon Taf, who have threatened their staff with massive job losses if they don’t accept pay cuts of up to 40%. The usual stuff I guess. The striking part, for me, in these stories was the sums of money involved. Rhondda Cynon Taf face a shortfall in their budget of £14 million. A huge sum of money! What else can they do but cut wages or lose staff. Maybe they should get on the phone to Mr. Diamond and ask for a handout. Apparently last year he got paid (notice I use the term ‘got paid’ rather than ‘earned’) £63 million. He earns £11.5 million a year at Barclays and it is suggested he will receive a £2.5 million bonus this year to add to the £100 million he has in the bank. I suspect he could help keep all those people employed in their, I suspect, rather poorly paid jobs, without breaking into a sweat. I don’t suppose it’s even worth mentioning the millions of people starving to death in the world while Bob and his buddies rake it in? What is wrong with the world?
