David Hockney’s Grimm’s Fairytale Illustrations

February 24, 2012

Today I assisted David Ambrose from Beyond the Border and behind the Wales International Storytelling Festival. We were running a session on the exhibition at the Wales Millennium Centre of David Hockney’s illustrations to six of the Grimm borther’s fairytales, for a class of year six pupils from Birchgrove Primary in Cardiff. The children listened to David’s remarkable storytelling of three of the Grimm’s fairytales and took their time looking at the Hockney prints on display. They then drew their own versions of another story – The Twelve Dancing Princesses. There drawings will be on display at the WMC for the next few weeks along with those of all the other children who are taking part in the ongoing sessions.

Below are a couple of drawings I made whilst there today. One of a boy engrossed in the storytelling, another of the Millennium Centre itself and one of the children busy drawing their own illustrations. It was an inspiring day all round and thoroughly enjoyable. I will make sure to get to the festival itself.
