Art and Medicine

June 26, 2015

I attended a workshop on the human heart at the end of May. It was held at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. They showed us the anatomy of the heart and let us get our hands on some real rabbit hearts. There was a simulated medical emergency and a dancer spoke well about her perspective on the heart and what it means to us all. It was good fun and interesting to meet some of the organisers who are trying to involve medical students in some form of creative art or another in an attempt to improve their overall development as doctors for the future. Perusing a creative project during their medical studies has proved useful for them by allowing them to tap into their emotional psyche and ultimately improving their social skills – i.e. their bedside manner. Which can only be a good thing.
